Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

[+] [-] How could certification benefit me?
Certification demonstrates that you have met clear and established guidelines of training and experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Many providers take pride in developing a specialty in particular approaches, and obtaining a certification is one way to emphasize and give credibility to those efforts. For some, certification may help to distinguish themselves in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy marketplace.

Certification may also increase employment marketability as many mental health settings look for providers who have distinguished themselves with focused training and development in sought-after treatments. Certification highlights professional development and may be a means of demonstrating goal obtainment for both personal and professional reasons.
[+] [-] How could certification benefit my clients?
Many clients benefit from knowing that their providers have verified training and experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. An added feeling of confidence in providers may increase belief and expectancy that the treatment is effective.

Further, Evergreen Certification Institute's emphasis on monitoring outcomes and adjusting treatment based on that data keeps you focused on what is most important: being effective with your clients in your setting one at a time.
[+] [-] Do I need to be certified to practice Dialectical Behavior Therapy or to be reimbursed for those services?
Certification is a voluntary process and individual Dialectical Behavior Therapy providers do not currently need to be certified to practice Dialectical Behavior Therapy. In some places there is a certification process for Dialectical Behavior Therapy programs that is required to use specific billing codes for Dialectical Behavior Therapy programming. In the future, certain States or HMOs may require that providers be certified or programs accredited in order to be reimbursed for certain Dialectical Behavior Therapy services.
[+] [-] How does certification relate to competency?
Competency in psychology, including a specialty such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy, is a life-long pursuit and not a black or white construct (i.e., competent versus not competent). Competency relates to training to acquire relevant professional and scientific knowledge, experience with the appropriate supervision and/or consultation to acquire professional skills, and the ability to recognize one’s limits of competency, signaling the need for further training, experience, supervision, consultation, or to refer the client on to another professional.

Competency requires continued professional growth through ongoing evaluation of one’s competencies along with continued education and practice. Certification verifies that benchmarks in training and experience have occurred, but declaring a competency in Dialectical Behavior Therapy should be carefully evaluated by providers in light of their total education, training, and experience guided by established ethical guidelines and codes of conduct. In other words, no test, work sample, evaluation, or certification process can claim to definitively verify one’s competence.
[+] [-] Where do I get the training to be Dialectical Behavior Therapy certified?
Evergreen Certification Institute recognizes training from regionally and nationally accredited universities as well as approved continuing education courses and workshops.
[+] [-] How long does the certification approval process take?
The certification approval process takes between 3-4 weeks.
[+] [-] What is the difference between a certificate and certification?
Certificate Programs and Certification are an increasing segment of the behavioral health continuing education marketplace. We understand that with new items and change that there can be confusion of the different terms and what they mean. For our purposes we define the following terms as such: - Certificate Programs indicate successful completion of a course, or series of courses, that recognize a specialty area of practice or set of skills. This demonstrates knowledge at a set time and has no ongoing requirements. - Professional Certifications are time-limited recognition evidencing competency as measured against predetermined and standardized criteria, typically by application and/or exam. These standardized criteria can include both academic and non-academic accomplishments such as hours in practice and licensure requirements. Certifications have ongoing requirements to maintain certification that require the holder to demonstrate s/he continues to meet or exceed the requirements set by the organization.
[+] [-] How can I find Dialectical Behavior Therapy consultation or supervision?
EVGCI suggests weekly consultation with at least one other licensed professional as a best practice. Although Dialectical Behavior Therapy consultation is preferred, it is not a requirement to be Dialectical Behavior Therapy specific. Of course, if a provider is a part of a bona fide Dialectical Behavior Therapy program, then that program will have Dialectical Behavior Therapy specific consultation as part of the model.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy consultation or supervision can be found through professional networking or through connecting with other EVGCI members to form consultative relationships. Although in-person consultation is preferred, consultation via phone or secure internet works too.
[+] [-] Can I become certified without professional experience?
No. The certification in Dialectical Behavior Therapy by Evergreen Certification Institute combines both academic requirements as well as a minimum of 500 therapy hours using Dialectical Behavior Therapy as the primary theoretical orientation with the use of weekly consultation and/or supervision.
[+] [-] What is Evergreen Certification Institute's return and refund policy?
A full refund of your purchase can be issued within 30 days from the day in which we received your payment.
[+] [-] Is this certification connected to Marsha Linehan and her training company Behavioral Tech?
Evergreen Certification Institute is not affiliated or associated with Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, ABPP, or her organizations.
